Real Time Strategy Games

These are my favorite types of games. These include games such as, Age of Empires II, Age of Empires III, Empire Earth, Empire Earth II, Empires Dawn of the Modern World, Rise of Nations, and many others. If you are new at playing Real Time Strategy Games, I would suggest you start off playing Age of Empires II.

For those who don’t know, A Real Time Strategy Game is the type of game where the “camera” hovers over the “world,” and you guide all of the people into creating an empire, or civilization. Take a look at the picture to see what I mean.

When you start one of these games, you begin with a Town Center (or Capital), and some villagers (see picture). At the Town Center, you can create villagers. The villagers can build buildings, walls, towers, and depending on the game, bridges. All the different types of buildings do different jobs. For instance, if you built a barracks, you could train swordsmen, or other military units there. Your villagers are vital to your survival. They are the ones that gather all the resources, such as food, wood, gold, stone, and iron. Train lots of villagers to gather resources. The more villagers you have, the more resources you will have. But, a word of warning, don’t just train villagers, they won’t fight off attackers.

The key strategy for this type of game is defense. But before you build all the different types of defense structures, train some units from your barracks first to guard you from any small attacks. When your villagers are doing pretty good at gathering resources, have some build several towers around your base. These towers will do a good job at defending your base against attackers. Training barracks units is a must. If attackers get past your towers, you need to have some solders ready to “make the enemy die for their country.” After the towers are built, build walls around your camp. If an enemy attacks, it will take him a while to get through the walls. When you build walls, it’s a good idea to train archers to shoot at attackers while they slash at the walls. Swordsmen attacking have absolutely no chance against this. As you can see in the picture, this is what can happen if you don't have good defense. These people had either not enough, or no defense structures.

In Age of Empires II, you can use siege equipment like a catapult to level forests. If there is a big section of woods, you can use the catapult make a narrow path toward the center of the forest. Then, make a big circular area. You can now build a base inside the circular area, and seal off the narrow path with walls, gates, lots of towers and castles. This is a very effective way to protect your base, and it’s frustrating to your enemy, you can’t find you anywhere on the map.

In Empire Earth, when you reach a certain age (like WWI), you can build an airport, and build airplanes. When you reach this age, you absolutely need to build planes, especially fighters. If you control the air, you will most likely win the game. Build Aircraft carriers, and airports, and control the air from all angles. Build several airports loaded to the max with fighters. Keep these airports in reserve, and protect them at all costs. Use these in emergencies, for instance, if you have a wing of fighters out strafing the an enemy town, and a patrol of enemy gunmen make a surprise attack on your villagers, all your villagers will be gone by the time you fighters can get back from the other side of the map, and if they do get back, the would be out of fuel. If you had a wing in reserve, fighters could be hitting the patrol in a matter of seconds.
