First Person Shooters

A First Person Shooter (commonly referred to as an FPS) is an intense, fast paced, shoot-em up game. Obviously it is played in the first person perspective, so you see what your character sees (this would include the gun, hand, and sometimes arm of the character). Some prime examples of this genre are Halo, Halo II, Counter Strike, Call of Duty, Call of Duty II, Doom III, Half Life, Half Life II, and Quake IIII. A decent game to start out with though is Medal of Honor.

Although many games have various game types such as Capture the Flag and others, the main goal of FPS games is to kill other players and that is what this guide will be focused on.

First thing’s, first.
Before you even start up a game, you are going to need to (if you haven’t already) get some sort of high speed internet deal. Without high speed internet, you will experience much lag that will NOT help you win in anyway at all.

Choosing your character
The next thing you need to do occurs before the game even starts. In most games you have different options to customize you character: such as colors. This can be used to your advantage. If you have customized your character look cool and stand out, that is a bad thing. Think about the map, or playing area, where the game is going to take place and the overall color scheme of the place. Then go and customize your character not coolly, but smartly. For example, in Halo 2 there is a map called “Midship” which is mainly purple and has some blue. To get an advantage over the other players, I have customized my player with the primary purple and secondary color blue. This provides me with a bit of camouflage and hides me much better than someone who decided their character would look cool in pink and white.

Killing people
What you have to remember about FPS games is that they are striving to be as realistic as possible, and because of this, there are a few things that affect game play. The first is that bullets, or other projectile, fired from a weapon, take time to reach their destination. For this reason, you need to fire your weapon where your target will be, not where it is currently at. This technique is known as “leading.” Leading can be a difficult skill to master, but with a little practice, you should see your game step up a few notches. The second thing you need to know is where to hit the player to cause the most damage, for most weapons, this is the head. There are, however, exceptions. The main one is explosives. Explosives will normally do damaged based on proximity, not where the explosive hit the player. For this reason, you want to aim explosives at a player’s feet because this will make it hard for them to dodge it and it won’t cause you to do any less damage.

Be On Your Guard
Always be on your guard. Watch any radar that you might have and never give anyone the chance to sneak up on you. Never stand still for too long and try to avoid open areas. This will make you a sitting duck for a long ranged weapon such as a sniper rifle. Also try to avoid a pattern in your movement as this will get you hit more often because players can predict where you will be and shoot there.

Good Luck and Practice!
